Not only is it pretty darn cool, it’s giving scientists a look at the plant life, the climate and the ecology of approximately 298 million years ago. The forest near Wuda, China was covered in volcanic ash over a period of a few days and well preserved, just as the town of Pompeii was in Italy in 79 C.E.

The picture is the scientists’ recreation of the forest. Pfefferkorn states, “This is now the baseline. Any other finds, which
are normally much less complete, have to be evaluated based on what we
determined here. … This is the first such forest reconstruction in Asia
for any time interval, it’s the first of a peat forest for this time
interval and it’s the first with Noeggerathiales as a dominant group.”

Their paper will be presented next week at the Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. According to their reports, this forest existed around the time of the super-continent known as Pangea.

Pfefferkorn says, “It’s like Pompeii: Pompeii gives us deep insight
into Roman culture, but it doesn’t say anything about Roman history in
and of itself. But on the other hand, it elucidates the time before and
the time after. This finding is similar. It’s a time capsule and
therefore it allows us now to interpret what happened before or after
much better.”

The stage collapse, which happened during a storm back in August 2011 left seven people dead and more than 40 injured. The country duo said in a response to the suit that “they had nothing to do with the construction of the venue” and that the collapse was caused by a “gust of wind of unprecedented intensity,”

Indiana State Fair Commission paid a $ 6,300 fine after the fair failed to conduct the correct safety evaluations earlier this month. Does it seem strange to you that it’s the band being sued and not the venue? According to the site, Sugarland claims that they didn’t even have a say about whether or not the band would perform that day though the other side debates that. Let us know your thoughts.

I’m starting to believe that any movie Charlize Theron stars in will be amazing. Of course I only say this because there’s no way that Kristen Stewert being in it is going to make it any good. If anything, I hope she gets away from the horrid acting & hair tossing she did as Bella. Ugh.
Also, Chris Hemsworth isn’t too bad. Actually, he’s pretty hot.

Little J departed “Gossip Girl” to sing with her band, The Pretty Reckless, full-time, and it appears her hard work is paying off. 
The band has landed a new gig opening for Marilyn Manson on the North American leg of the rocker’s latest tour.
Momsen tweeted the news last week, writing, “The Pretty Reckless will be opening for @marilynmanson in the USA on his spring tour!! So excited!”
The band has also had high-profile opening slots for Guns N’ Roses and Evanescence. The Pretty Reckless’ first Manson date will be April 27 in Providence, Rhode Island.
Momsen was recently spotted at Marchesa’s Fall 2012 Fashion Week show in New York City wearing lace and looking decidedly less grungy than usual, but we’re sure the raccoon eye makeup will return before the Manson tour.

The One Tree Hill alum is making a comeback to TV!
Sophia Bush has kept a pretty low profile lately but she’s just signed on to star in CBS‘ new comedy pilot, Partners.
According to Variety, she will play the part of Ali, the “girlfriend of one of the show’s two male architects whose relationship itself resembles a marriage.”
Bush is already feeling the love from her co-stars as she posted the following on her WhoSay page: 

“Flowers from the creators of my new show. Seriously!? So classy. Swoon. I may or may not be crying. (I am. I am crying.) My heart is full of love. #Partners #IAmAli #IsThisRealLife“

Glad she’s making a comeback!

After six years of playing the role of Emily Prentiss on Criminal Minds, actress Pagent Brewster is ready to move on.
Brewster’s character had faked her death last season but returned at the beginning of this season, pleasing many fans. The actress released a statement regarding her decision, stating:

“After six wonderful years playing Emily Prentiss, I have decided it’s time for me to move on. As much as I will miss my Criminal Mind family, I am excited about the future and other opportunities.“

The series executive producer also released a statement the decision was purely Brewster’s decision:

“We were all sad to hear the news, but we respect and support any decision Paget want to make. Personally, I’m a huge fan and will continue to be one wherever she goes.”

42-year-old Brewster took a hiatus from the show last season when she shot a pilot for NBC called My Life Is an Experiment, however it was not picked up. Hence, her return to CM.
I’ve never been a fan of the show but I’m sure fans will be as sad as I was to see Grissom leave CSI. *sad face*

Think again.

The New York Knickerbockers saw their 7-game winning streak snapped Friday with a loss to the New Orleans Hornets. New superstar Jeremy Lin had an uncharacteristically (well, uncharacteristic for his last several games) poor game, committing nine turnovers.

But he bounced back Sunday (Feb. 19) against the Dallas Mavericks, scoring 28 points, earning 14 assists. He still had seven turnovers, which is a bit of an Achilles’ Heel, but it was enough to power the Knicks over the Mavs 104 to 97.

There were no last-minute heroics like in the win over Toronto on Valentine’s Day, but Lin did have almost half his assists in just the fourth quarter. The next chance to catch “Linsanity” is when the Knicks take on the New Jersey Nets Monday night (Feb. 20) at Madison Square Garden.

These twin girls are used to being in front of a camera due to their mom being on the MTV hit show, Teen Mom 2 so they didn’t seem the least bit shy on stage.
19-year-old Leah Messer and ex-husband Corey Simms entered their 2-year-old twins, Aliannah and Aleeah into a Valentine’s Day beauty pageant that was held to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research.
At least it was for a good cause.
The two cuties donned bright pink tutu dresses and waved to the crowd like pros. The girls grandpa, Corey’s father, tweeted his happiness over watching his grandchildren win:

“Ali and Gracie both did very well at their first pageant today. Ali won prettiest smile and Gracie won prettiest eyes.“

Messer seemed to be in good spirits despite her recent miscarriage in January. She was expecting a child with her fiance Jeremy Calvert, who she began dating soon after her marriage to Simms ended in April 2011.
It’s good to see the two are coming together for their daughters.

The most comforting aspect, if one can be comforted by spending an evening with a man who apparently reads minds, is that this evening could have happened a century ago, and it would have been as entertaining.
Nothing that needed charging was used to create the performance in which observational skills and non-verbal communication reigned. Mentalist Marc Salem performs his show, “Mind Over Manhattan” at the Concert Hall at the New York Society for Ethical Culture. The show opened Saturday (Feb. 18) and runs through March 10.
The legitimate question is what exactly is a mentalist? 
After watching him for about 100 minutes (no intermission), the only thing that was clear is that Salem is a very sharp guy and one would not want to try to dupe him. The murkier aspects are how he knew some oddly specific details about strangers.
“I don’t use people I know,” he says. “I am not going to tell you about your past, hopefully most of you remember that.”
A psychologist who was a professor and worked with the NYPD, Salem has been at this a while. From the beginning, he explained that no one would be humiliated and no occult is used.
He invites people from the audience, then asks them to help him by drawing a simple picture, separating cards or picking a word from a book. Wearing a three-piece black suit, black shirt and black tie, Salem chats a little with the audience, when he starts. In retrospect, it’s clear he’s checking them out, but he tells us from the beginning that he has no stooges planted in the audience.
Yet he can tell when someone is lying, guess which card someone has picked and figure out what word someone picked while leafing through a book. It would be easy to shrug off his statements as clever guesses, but he writes them down before the subjects answer.

Mentalist Marc Salem: Mind Over Manhattan knows what youre thinking

The most impressive number had him triple blindfolded: 50-cent coins were placed on his eyes, then medical tape, applied by physicians he found in the audience was affixed over the coins and a black blindfold tied over it all. He had the doctors pick up a few personal items from audience members and he had other people pass out slips of paper where people wrote their names and a place that had significance.
I tried to remain skeptical, but the person I brought with me, who was not on any invitation list, happened to have a card passed to her. She wrote her name and listed a memorable trip to Iceland. He called that out from the stage, while triple blindfolded.
Sure there are magicians who work the Bar Mitzvah circuit, and admittedly I had seen the puzzle trick he did at one; in this case the Mona Lisa was turned into a puzzle missing a piece. A guy from the audience, who answered the call that he was creative and intellectual, (and may suffer from a superiority complex) eventually pulled the missing piece from a bag. 
Other bits, though, were astounding. One of the doctors collected dog tags from someone. Salem not only guessed what they were — not by touching them — but hovering his hand above a foot over them, and he guessed the identification number on them.
Is there a magician’s trick to it? There would have to be, but I don’t want to know what it is. In a world where we are always two clicks from information, some of it actually accurate, it is comforting to be part of an audience not quite sure how he knew the woman behind me had almost passed out on Thursday.
